The Asheville Chess Club does directly offer coaching or tutoring services. Some members of the community offer private coaching and lessons, and their contact information can be found here.

Peter Michelman
Peter has been a regular member of the Asheville Chess Club for well over a decade. Originally from New York, Peter has played in major events all over the country. Most recently, Peter won the open section of Asheville’s own Land of the Sky XXXVI in early 2024.
Peter also has his own granola company, and you can always count on him to have some on hand.

Mark Allen
A longtime member of the Asheville Chess Club and a chess coach who works with students of all ages, from beginners to advanced players. Mark’s coaching emphasizes having fun, building passion for the game, and learning practical skills that lead to steady, consistent improvement.
Mark has taught in both public and private school programs and offers clear, supportive instruction that helps players grow their confidence, deepen their understanding, and enjoy the process of getting better.

The Asheville Chess Club currently has a presence in several local schools, supporting and leading chess clubs both before and after school.
If you are interested in starting a chess club for your or your child’s school, let us know! We do not have enough staff to support a club in every school, but we have all the resources and information you need to get one started!
